Microchip search portal goes live, giving vets one-stop access to major UK databases

Industry body says the free system will cover more than 90% of active registrations at launch

Veterinary practices can now check microchip details held on several of the UK’s largest pet databases through a single search, following the launch of a new portal by the Association of Microchip Database Operators (AMDO).

The Single Point of Search (SPoS), sometimes called the central microchip portal, went live on 30 September. Until now, vets with an unidentified animal have had to find out which database a chip is registered on, then contact that operator separately to get the keeper’s details. Under SPoS, authorised users can search connected databases in one place.

The first phase links five databases: Chipworks, Identi, MyPet, Petlog and PETtrac. AMDO says these hold more than 90% of active registrations, citing Defra figures. Three more AMDO member databases are being connected, and other compliant UK databases are being invited to apply.

The service is free to authorised users. As well as vet practices, these include rescue organisations, police, local authorities, trading standards and animal wardens.

Access through practice software

Because authorised users work across different IT systems, AMDO says SPoS may be offered through a small number of approved providers, including online and through practice management or animal management software. Each version will work the same way, and organisations will only need to register with one. A list of approved providers is on the AMDO website.

Users must go through a sign-up process designed to keep keeper information secure. AMDO highlighted the risks in cases involving ownership disputes, stolen pets and people escaping domestic abuse.

Not a replacement for accurate records

AMDO stressed that the portal cannot fix problems such as out-of-date contact details, unregistered chips or pets registered to the wrong keeper. It urged everyone working with pet owners to encourage them to keep their registration details current.

Existing phone lines and lookup links between databases will remain in place. AMDO noted that these are still important for animal wardens and others working remotely or out of hours.

Delivering on a 2024 pledge

The launch follows Defra’s announcement in March 2024 that a central portal would be created so approved users could search microchip records without contacting each database individually. AMDO describes SPoS as an industry-led solution developed with Defra. It says this approach avoided a lengthy government procurement process and saved millions of pounds in public money.
